DEAL Services: using agent-technology to improve flexibility, reliability and efficiency in logistics  Developments in traffic intensity and infrastructure, advances in information and communication technology and increasing integration across supply chains have all helped to pave the way for a new approach to organizing the physical distribution of goods and services. Instead of using a top-down approach to plan and manage thousands of shipments from their sources to their destinations using the available resources, a new bottom-up approach empowers, in a sense, each shipment with the means to make sure it reaches it's destination on-time. The shipments themselves reserve capacity with transportation resources, and if needed, they communicate their expected arrival time to the client ahead of time.  DEAL Services aims to apply principles of self-organization and multi-agent technology to logistics. More specifically, the technology offered by DEAL Services helps to organize the physical distribution process of goods and services without sacraficing flexibility. DEAL actually helps to increase the flexibility and service-level towards customers. SENSE Observation Systems SENSE Observation Systems develops applications for and with wireless sensor networks (WSN). Within these applications, genericness and intelligence are important aspects. The first enables wireless sensor network solution to be integrated and embedded into existing contexts. The latter focusses on pattern recognition, escalation mechanisms and forecasting on different levels of the WSN application. Important markets for SENSE Observation Systems are logistics (tracking and tracing, quality monitoring) and built environments (tracking and tracing of humans, office monitoring).
SENSE Observation Systems is a research spin-off, extending the work done by Almende in research projects Containers in a Network (CAN), and more recent Ambient Living within Embedded Networks (ALwEN) and Sensor Technology on Radio Modules (STORM). Currently, some of the productising and market development activities are part of SMART Innovation, an Innovatie Prestatie Contract (IPC) project coordinated by Stichting Zelforganisatie. Â Â |

The 2010 edition of ICTDelta will be an inspiring and dynamic festival revealing all the latest on Dutch ICT initiatives. The festival, held on the 18th of March, presents a packed programme of presentations, discussion sessions and demonstrations. Among those demonstrations is The Marauder's Map by Almende spin-off SENSE Observation Systems, part of the What's Cooking theme 
It's no coincidence that Metaverse1, an ITEA 2 project Almende participates in, is named after a fictional virtual world in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash. The Metaverse in Snow Crash is an urban environment, either projected as high-quality virtual reality display onto goggles worn by the user, or shown as low-quality public terminals in booths. The ICIS Final Event of January 26th proved a worthy ending of this five-year BSIK program. ICIS aimed to develop better techniques for making complex information systems more intelligent and supportive in decision making situations. Almende presented its contributions on an architecture for hybrid actor agent networks and SENZORG 
Almende would like to wish everyone a happy 2010! For Almende, this year means the start of three new projects. One of these is the FP7 project FIT4Green. This project aims at ICT energy reduction. It does that by creating an energy-aware layer of plug-ins for IT data centre automation frameworks. Two other new projects - as mentioned DELIVER and SUPPORT - focus on the improvement of logistic planning.
